CASE STUDY

Virtual Expert Teleportation in Regional Neonatal Care

In hub-and-spoke neonatal networks, physical retrieval is often the default response to an acutely unwell newborn at a district general hospital. It carries clinical risk, uses retrieval and tertiary cot capacity, and separates families. LocANTS gives a tertiary PaNDR consultant at Addenbrooke's live, high-definition presence at the cot-side, so infants can be stabilised in place.

  • The index case: a preterm infant with suspected sepsis and meningitis, stabilised in place at Colchester Hospital and recognised as a UK-first in January 2023.
  • Three further neonatal and paediatric cases, and outcomes for all 11, including where transfer to a surgical or cooling centre was still needed.
  • Governance (DTAC, DSPT and Cyber Essentials completed; DCB0129 pack available) and the three-stage scaling roadmap.

De-identified version, 14-page PDF. The evidence to date is a case series; larger datasets are needed to quantify clinical and health-economic outcomes.
